2.       Context and approach: description of the context, your team’s analysis of it, and your team’s approach to introducing innovative digital elements or changing the context to make it possible to accommodate new digital elements. (two paragraph max or ~500 words – most of this are in your presentations and posters, I need a summary)

Our Concept is to create an imaginary fish market fortune teller who answers questions based on changing fish market data (such as fish type, location caught, date caught, and price). Our proposal is to create an interactive experience inside the Dong gang fish marketplace in Taiwan. We base this experience upon the traditional Poa̍h-poe fortune telling.

The new and Innovative component of our proposal is to take an old Chinese fortune telling metaphor and join it with a new media experience. This will attract not only fish market shoppers, but also those who are looking for unknown or changing marketplace information in the form of a fortune. The experiences we hope to evoke include amusement, chance, frustration, answered wishes, discovery, informative understanding.

3.       Description of the concept developed and digital elements you designed: functions and features, fit for the context, structure, fabrication etc. (two paragraphs or ~max 500 words supported by images if you need)

Our concept was developed first through a discussion: “What are the user needs inside the fish market?” We came to the realization that many times, shoppers don’t know what they want to buy and may need some suggestions or guidance. We saw common themes in fish market shoppers that seek guidance and Poa̍h-poe fortune telling. For Poa̍h-poe, a fortune is received by throwing wooden objects and picking sticks- essentially game involving chance. Within the fish marketplace context, we further refined the fortune telling metaphor and traditional Poa̍h-poe process and came up with an interactive prototype to implement/build.

For our prototype, Poa̍h-poe wooden objects and sticks are the only tangible objects used in the experience. Through our understanding of physical computing, we choose to model the Poa̍h-poe objects because there are only two pieces while there are many sticks. For the prototype the sticks are included in the flash interface although they could also be modeled. The rest of the process is handled by the computer (using Flash) by means of an interactive display. The project would resemble a kiosk inside the marketplace with a display, sound, and Poa̍h-poe objects.

4.       Images and movies (if any): three images of the concept and design and movie(s) showing your prototype system in action if you have. (Jack I have a video when you are demonstrating your team’s design)
